1. Story written by Effie Ehlers Fowler as told by Freda "Ethel" Ehlers, undated.

"Our little family was born and brought up on the family farm. We didn't have a creek on our place so when we did get a chance to go down on the creek it was with excitement and a chance to explore. So this one lovely spring day we kids were home alone as the folks worked in town. We were pleasantly surprised with the beautiful, yellow, pungent flowers growing down there. So before we went home we picked armloads of these lovely flowers and took them home. On arriving home we put them in water in cans, jars any containers we could find. They were beautiful so pungent. They were all carefully placed under the bed in Mom and Pop's bedroom. The kids all stayed up as long as allowed, then went to bed but to sleep. Finally the folks went to bed but kept wondering where the pungent odor was coming from. They couldn't stand it any longer and started searching. Lo and behold under the bed by the dozens were these beautiful, pungent, yellow skunk cabbage."

"Took quite awhile for these giggling kids to settle down to sleep. Ethel told this one and I think she has many more."
